Some clients not updating, reporting 8007000E error in WindowsUpdate.log

At customer location workstations doesn't install any updates anymore. This because of the following error in windowsupdate.log: COMAPI WARNING: ISusInternal::GetUpdateMetadata2 failed, hr=8007000E. For it seems this we be only the case on Windows 7 x86 systems. Installing a new hotfix must do the trick. Let's have a look at that one.

The issue is discussed on Microsoft TechNet too:
Some Clients Not Updating. Reporting "Compliant." hr=8007000E Error in WindowsUpdate.log

For it seems there is an issue in which the Windows Update Client displays an out-of-memory error during the scan operation (0x8007000E) on systems that have small amounts of physical RAM. Therefore a hotfix is needed.

The hotfix (KB3050265) can be download here:
New Windows Update Client for Microsoft Windows 7 Available

After installation (and a required reboot) there was still an error however. Therefore we started the following commands (in an elevated command prompt) to make it functional again:
Net stop wuauserv
Sc config wuauserv type= own
Net start wuauserv

After that everything started to work again! :)

Update 23-11: (by Trevor Jones)
Just FYI, KB3050265 has been superseded by several updates. The latest WU client is http://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3102810 and fixes the same plus additional issues :)

  7. Thanks, Henk. However, still failing :-( Error message on attempted WU is 8007000E - after about 20 minutes of "Checking for updates...."

I have manually applied http://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3102810 - and stopped and restarted the WU service - as admin; but still no luck.

Strangely, the machine worked fine 11 months ago when I built it, and it automatically applied all the necessary, relevant updates at the time...

The only gremlin last week was that CMOS / BIOS had lost the time after 11 months, and had to be reset - but everything else works OK...

Perhaps I'm just too optimistic using this hardware configuration?

  20. You would think Microsoft Windows Support team would be aware of this problem and it's solution by now. I had their technician on my computer for 4 hors on last Friday, and 3 this morning before elevating to second tier support. While waiting for second tier I installed the hotfix and it is now installing another 192 updates. We will see if windows update continues to function when this is completed. The last tech I spoke to said because it is Win 7 (an old operating system) I would not continue to get updates. She had nothing to say when I told her my other 38 Win7 machines were still updating just fine.

  48. Hi Henk,

I have 3 computers that are getting the 8007000E error and they are all windows 7 professional 32 bit with 4GB of memory.

I tried installing the KB3050265 and the KB3102810. After a reboot I ran these 3 commands in an elevated cmd prompt.

    Net stop wuauserv
    Sc config wuauserv type= own
    Net start wuauserv

Then I tried running windows update again and still got the 8007000E error.

Is there anything else I can try or are there any new KB updates I can install to get past this?

    Thanks,

    Jason

  60. After I reinstalled Windows 7 x86 and updated the initial install I got "unknown error 8007000E". That happened after several updates were installed. I think the error happened after SP1 was installed. I looked for a solution but initially I did not find one. By coincidence after leaving the pc on for several days ( I think it was three) some update installed and fixed the error. However I have several systems to reinstall and I can’t wait several days on each system. My search led me to your post and I used http://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3102810 and that just really solved the problem. I would like to just say thank you to both Mr. Henk Hoogendoorn and Mr. Trevor Jones for taking the time to post the solution. Your post really saved me lots of time and frustration. I just like to add that I do not believe the problem is because the system has small amounts of physical RAM. The P.C. I had this problem with had 4 Gigs of RAM and nothing but Windows installed. Anyhow, Thanks again.

But i still have one question: before i never had any problems downloading those updates and i have 4 Gb RAMS at my disposal. Did this happen because of an malfunctioning hotfix? Came here and this fixed it for us as well!
Latest update seems to be KB3112343 fromDecember 2015.
Also, the sc line to place wasn't needed for us, but can't hurt as it places wuauserv in it's own private memory.

  74. Hi-Here's the non-tech solution that worked on my HP with Marvell-Yukon Ethernet controller running Windows 7. I started windows update, and then I got out my Windows 7 distribution disk and ran it as if I were going to put a new system in. The disk starts by downloading temporary files, and then searches for installation updates. I let it run for quite awhile, until it said that it couldn't install a new Windows 7 system, because the running system is newer. Without any further interference, windows update finished with my 231 updates--all is well. I wonder if this will work for anyone else?.....
